On December 9, I asked those interested in seeing Maximilian on DSiWare to comment on the blog post, saying that if we receive at least 1000 comments then we’ll bring it to DSiWare. So far, we have just over 400 comments. I will give it until January 9, to see what the final number is, but at this rate it looks very unlikely that we’ll receive 1000 legitimate votes for the game. This is sad, but also exactly why we asked for votes; to help us gauge whether development of the game would be financially wise or not. Honestly, if we can’t scrounge up at least 1000 votes in one month, it’s a fair sign that there aren’t enough people out there interested in the game, DSiWare, or both. I know I don’t have thousands of people visiting my blog, but Go Nintendo were kind enough to place a banner at the top of their site for many weeks, and even that did not drive enough people to vote.
Right now, we’re in heavy get-new-projects mode. There is one 3DS title that we’re in talks about with a publisher. It is a really cool game. It would be a conversion of an existing title, which we would bring to the 3DS. Let’s call it code-named “Planet”. In theory, we’re very close to signing this deal with the publisher. But, anything can happen in the world of business, so all we can do is hope everything stays its course and we sign it soon.
We’re also in talks with a couple of publishers regarding some value DS titles. Now, before you assume “value title” is synonymous with shovelware or crap, it doesn’t have to be that way. It depends on how you approach it. In my mind, the concept of a value title is a simple and fun game that costs less than a regular game. When you buy a DSiWare game for $8, for example, you are not expecting the same scope of game that you would buy at $29.99. They may be smaller in scope than games that cost $34.99 or $29.99, but that doesn’t mean they have to be any less fun or contain less quality work. Shantae, Dark Void Zero, and Cave Story are good examples of smaller scoped titles that are high quality in terms of craftsmanship and fun. Perhaps there are 10 levels instead of 15, or 4 characters instead of 8. Or perhaps it is a conversion of something that was developed for a different platform.
Now, why would anyone want to release value titles for the DS, right? Well, the market can create the need for publishers to consider these options. Value titles cost less to produce in terms of development costs, and the size of the cartridge that the game uses is smaller. So, instead of the development cost being 300,000 potatoes, it may cost just 100,000 potatoes due to the smaller scope of the game and/or leveraging of existing technology. Remember, this does not need to affect the quality of the title; just the size of it or perhaps the effort needed to complete the title (by leveraging existing assets). Also, instead of using a large cartridge that may cost the publisher 8 potatoes per cart to manufacture, a smaller cart may cost just 6 potatoes. Nice! So, we’ve managed to save a bunch of potatoes in development cost AND 2 potatoes PER CART by going with a smaller cartridge. If the first run of cartridges is 30,000 units, for example, that’s 30,000 multiplied by 2 potatoes, which is 60,000 potatoes in savings - based on the cart size alone! Plus, the 200,000 potatoes saved in development costs is a total savings of 260,000 potatoes. Very nice! However, due to the fact the game may sell for $19.99 or $14.99, there is less profit made on the sale of each game, but the hope is that more copies are sold due to the lower price. I know, I know; you don’t buy those lower priced titles anyway because you assume they’re all cheap crap. Fair enough. I am hesitant too. They usually are cheap crap. But, the majority of people who buy video games, on the DS and Wii anyway, are not hardcore gamers. They are casual gamers or parents, who do not perceive lower price as lower quality. The unfortunate reality is that many publishers take advantage of this and DO produce cheap crap. Sigh. I hope this evil practice ends eventually, but I know it won’t. Anywho, rest assured that if we sign on to develop a value title for the DS, our focus will be on producing a good game that is fun to play.
Here’s a quick question for you…
Which genre would you like to see Renegade Kid create for the DS?
- First-Person Shooter
- Third-Person Shooter
- Vehicular Combat
- 2D Platformer
- 3D Platformer
- Racing
- Virtual Pet
Jools
I'd like to see Renegade Kid's take on the virtual pet genre.
ReplyDeleteMaybe using the Dementium IP as the user takes on the role of the Doctor at the Bright Dawn Treatment Facility?
I would love to see you guys create a tight and focused 2D platformer. There is obvious talent at your studio, and we need more people like you putting their all into making games that are just fun to play for the greatest number of people. :)
ReplyDeleteCan't that question about which genres we'd like you to work on also be for the 3DS and not just for the DS?
ReplyDeleteBecause a 3D platformer would be great for the 3DS! :)
A 2D Platformer would be good.
ReplyDeleteFPS// or 3D platformer
ReplyDelete2D plaformer, definitely. Is there any chance that if you go down that route you could eventually upscale for WiiWare or something like that? ;)
ReplyDeleteMake an exploratory FPS in the vein of Descent. Nobody has made one in a while, and Interplay sure as heck isn't going to get off their butts and do it.
ReplyDeleteI want you to know that I and we appreciate all the hard work you guys do! You seem to have a good attitude for game making, and I'll definitely follow (and support) your future work closely! The world needs more Renegade Kids and less crappy/lazy game companies.
ReplyDeleteWell, if we take into consideration that all of FPS are awesome maybe you should make another one (With Wi-Fi multyplayer it would be amazing!).
ReplyDeleteAlso, the idea of a Renegade Kid 2D plataformer is great as well... maybe you should go that route instead of a FPS or a 3D Plataformer
A 2D platformer in the vein of Cave Story would be pretty epic! Platformers are probably my favorite genre, and Cave Story with a Renegade Kid twist would be pretty awesome. Unless it's for the 3DS, then a 3D Platformer would be pretty nice. A 2D platformer would still work though.
ReplyDeleteJust because it's my favorite type of game, I vote for a 2D platformer - specifically one of the "Metroidvania" variety.
ReplyDeleteI would vote FPS since you guys are so good at it, but you've already done three of those. We don't really need more, right?
But the original concept for Moon was a platformer on the Gameboy Color, wasn't it? I would love to see something like that.
Hm. I failed to notice at first that you had vehicular combat on your list. I change my vote to that.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved the Twisted Metal games, but I don't have a PS3, so a new game in that style is exactly what I need.
An FPS with online multiplayer would be ideal, considering that you guys brought about three of the best FPS games on the DS since Metroid :) Now all we need is multiplayer.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work, Jools, FPS or not, I'm sure you'll make something incredible. I'm not a fan of racing games and I already have ATV Wild Ride on my list of must-buys for this year :)
Dementium with a more co-op style system to play with friends?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I would really love another Dementium game, but on the 3DS. It would be interesting what you guys can accomplish with power of that system. You got the controls down, so I would assume it would be easier to develop.
ReplyDeleteA sequel to moon would be really cool! On the 3DS!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I left a comment on the Maximilian post and hope to see that game come out, I must admit that I don't have an interest in DSiWare games. That's a bit odd since I've bought a lot of downloadable games for the 360 and PS3, but for whatever reason I'd rather have the game on a cart for the DS.
ReplyDeleteAs far as what type of game I would like to see Renegade Kid try next I vote for anything that isn't a first/third person shooter. I own all three of your previous games and enjoyed them, but I felt that first person shooters aren't the best fit for a handheld system that lacks two analog sticks. Don't get me wrong, I know using the touch screen worked fine but just because you guys could make a FPS for the DS doesn't mean you should have.
I would much rather see a game that avoids the DS's shortcomings and takes advantage of it's strengths. So I'll vote for a 2D platformer (hopefully a Mega Man style action game or a Castlevania style RPG).
Of the genres you listed, FPSs and 2D platformers are usually the safer genres to go with. A 3D platformer would be nice as well, but you would have to really raise the bar for a game of the other genres for people to not consider them shovelware.
ReplyDeleteWhen I posted on GFAQS about ATV WR, RK fans were enthusiastic but others commented about how it seems like every other non-Mario Kart racer on the DS. Games Are very unfairly prejudged and written off and one person's opinion, no matter how uniformed or biased, effects others, unfortunately.
My point is that, financially, FPSs or 2/3D platformers are your safest bet.
Platformer of any kind please!
ReplyDeletei vote for a fast, arcade style fps title like quake 1 :) with multiplayer and bots.
ReplyDeletealso nice 2d platformer, with pixel art gfx, its not a bad idea!
..or maybe some fast action packed space-based science fiction flight simulator like "starlancer"? there is no game like this on DS
ReplyDeletesorry for my engrish
How about a 2.5D platformer? The kind that uses 3D graphics, but restricts movement to a 2D plane (think Klonoa or Donkey Kong Country Returns)? I'm thinking that a project like that would look nothing short of beautiful on the 3DS.
ReplyDeleteA pet game where you can create your own creature like in Spore.
ReplyDeletei would love for you guys to make an online ds fps like metroid prime hunters since you guys seem to the only developers willing to make an fps for the ds(apart from nspace).
ReplyDeletei would like a Third-Person shooter, we don't have many games of this genre on the ds.
ReplyDeleteand for 3ds... it would be nice if u guys make a game focused on a "open world" where the player can choose the missions, interact in the places and go everywhere. I am talking about a game like GTA and Bully (not necessarily a violent game)
Oh man, I'd love to see a Moon 2 on the 3/DS.
ReplyDeleteOr a 3Dementium^^
Yeah, I'd like to see a new FPS on the DS.
WAIT! Did you say Planet? A new moon? Oh my god, a Moon for the 3DS! Awesome :D :D :D
ReplyDeleteI can truly say Mr. Jools, that you have truly made wonderful games for the DS. I liked the concepts and graphics of the Dementium titles and Moon title. As for a new DS title, I was just wondering if you've heard of a japanese horror game called Nanashi No Game by square enix? Maybe you could one day make a horror title with a concept like Nanashi no game, or if thats no good a third-person shooter zombie game might sound good too :) or just a 2-D platformer
ReplyDelete2D platformer. Still the best genre for gaming.
ReplyDeletei love your first person shooter games and think it would be awesome to see a dementium 3 but i also think it would be cool if you guys could make a vehicular combat game for the ds/3ds i always loved playing vigilante 8 on the n64.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'd enjoy another Dementium or something similar, what I'd really like to see from you guys is a 2D platformer!
ReplyDeleteI would love a 3d platformer with 60fps using the renegade kid engine!
ReplyDeleteA good, budget-priced DS title? I guess it'd be hard for FPS and TPS to fit in there... Which leaves Vehicular Combat, 2D Platformer, 3D Platformer, Racing and Virtual Pet. Vehicular Combat and Racing, sound a bit too similar to ATV Wild Ride (at least Racing does), so unless you don't mind, you should rule those out. Leaving you with 2D Platformer, 3D Platformer and Virtual Pet. Sorry guys, but I honestly don't see a Virtual Pet game from you guys succeeding. I just think that RK isn't made for Virtual Pet games. So a Platformer it'd be. I'd really love to know what you guys can do with a platformer, either 2D or 3D.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, those publishers offering you budget-game deals? Show them MUDDS.
I can see it working perfectly if properly adjusted and aimed at a certain demographic group. Besides, DS carts offer much more space than DSiWare, so, even though the point of a budget title is low-cost, you could still develop a great game, without needing to restrict yourself to 20 MB (the DSiWare size limit, if I'm not mistaken) nor use 128 MB. I am more than sure that MUDDS would be perfect as a 32 MB retail game. I know I'd buy it!
Hope I helped in any way, RK (:
I would really want to see a 2D platformer from Renegade Kid! 3D would also be cool, but I guess you already tried that with Maximilian. A TPS or another FPS would be great as you already have experience in them and have a capable engine. However, that require a lot of capacity on the cart, so it won't work as a value title. And I would rather see something new from you, like a 2D platformer. :)
ReplyDeleteFirest/Third person shooter or a 3D platformer
ReplyDelete2D platformer all the way! I would like a dark, gritty, violent and unpleasant 2D horror game. I know you guys can make it!
ReplyDeleteA third-person shooter, one that's like the Uncharted series. That would be amazing.
ReplyDeleteI'm the Anon above. I forgot to say that my other choice would be 2D platformer. And like another user said, maybe a 2.5D platformer like Klonoa or Kirby 64.
ReplyDeleteAfter Moon, i'd happily wet myself over another Renegade Kid FPS.
ReplyDeleteFailing that, 3D platformer (or even 2.5D) would be great.
I would love to see a 2D platformer. I'm not really into the FPS genre and a good, challenging, 2D platformer will always stand out in my mind.
ReplyDeletemy vote is for a Third-Person Shooter!
ReplyDeleteGuys seriously, don't any of you feel that some types of games are just better suited to consoles and PC? When I was playing Renegade Kid's last three games (all of which I enjoyed), I couldn't help but imagine these cool First Person Shooter games in beautiful high-definition with better controls and online play. Why would I want to play a FPS on the DS when I could be playing one on my 360? I know that being on the DS means I could get my FPS fix while I'm on the go, but I feel that I could always wait until I get to my console and have a better experience there. So I'm with all the people voting for a platformer, preferably a 2.5D one
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the team at Renegade Kid create a 2D platformer for the Nintendo DS. Moon delivered an FPS experience that really, for me, satisfied my desire to have another Metroid Prime game on the go. Since Nintendo never delivered with a Metroid sidescroller, I would like to see Renegade Kid create a 2D platformer in that direction to fill that void. You did very well in crafting a Metroid Prime flair of your own with Moon, so I'm sure you could achieve a similar result in a 2D platformer.
ReplyDeleteAfter Maximillian, I'd love to see you guys great a 3D platformer.
ReplyDeletealot of idea's(only got thought 3 sofar)
ReplyDeleteI have a idea of action/job-fetch:gameplay where you take a ciartour from your game libary an put them on a revenge or retribution mission a comedy/action:story were they go on afules airen or seak revenge for how thing went wrong after there last Game, soming that could add to he or shes story in renag.
it may sound like river city ransom or no more heroes 2, kind of frame on the game, with a star-tropics"upbeat take, sound-wise" With 32-16bit look for the "Renegade Kid's revenge"
I'd like to see another FPS games. Like a war-shooter like Call of Duty, only with your engine and online-mode!
ReplyDeleteThat would be amazing!
A team-based FPS would be great if you are willing to make one with a story mode and multiplayer with a choice between classes such as soldier, medic/field ops, and engineer.
ReplyDeleteI havent been keeping up w/ your blog, so I couldnt asnwer this earlier. Looking through what people wanted, i saw a lot of 2D platformer requests. That would be awesome w/ your tech and ideas. Make a good action platformer not just a collection fest. Ninjas are always in style. And no doubt another FPS. Save that for the 3DS
ReplyDeleteAnother FPS would be great; the DS barely has any of them that are worth anything, and nearly all of them are yours.
ReplyDelete*and this time, an FPS with online/local multiplayer as well, if that's possible. Bots would be great, too.
ReplyDeleteI think your next ds game needs to be a FPS shooter, similar to metroid hunters...but make it an Arena game.....mainly multiplayer or playing bots when solo...but with unlockable weapons and armor or tech upgrades, interactive level aspects like traps or turrents, maybe a vehicle or two. 4 player download and 12 player (all with carts) Lots of levels or like "Dirt" with an editor. Even adding in mini games like hide-n-seek, infected, capture the flag, kill the man with the ball, etc.
ReplyDelete
